The Fatigues of Supporting Freedom

The Fatigues of Supporting Freedom

Jun 8, 2017

"Those who expect to reap the blessings of freedom, must, like men, undergo the fatigues of supporting it." – Thomas Paine – (1737 – 1809) Pretty bold quote for a simple blog post documenting my attendance at some recent events. A good food fore thought, or conversation starter though. I would rather be doing any number of thing right now than writing this blog post or attending the events I personally attended documented in this post. However it’s important to all of us citizens, the We The People of our government, spend some of our time researching, thinking for ourselves then discussing and finally voting at the minimum.  That’s the extent of my preaching. Think for yourself, you’re not a lemming. Research and read, consider all sides please don’t blindly follow faith based, or party lines. You could find that although you feel strongly about one thing you might disagree with far more of any organizations views. Think for yourself, be yourself. I attended these events to be counted, and to see for myself the attendance. I had every intention of posting these sooner. I received a bit of extra motivation watching the Live James Comey testimony before Congress. Since a picture is worth a thousand words…    The three events. My First Single’s Dance

As I left for the singles dance I learned about on MeetUp I tweeted: “33% overweight, no teeth, shabby wardrobe – Heading for a singles dance! http://bit.ly/N8rFqu I did get a haircut! ;-)” Never mind that I had chickened out of going to two previous similar events. I found a reasonably clean shirt in the closet, but I felt it was a little tight and definitely not for going out on a Saturday night (unless it was to a conservative code fest) to the Single’s Dance! Fueling my pony (actually a Seabring convertible) gave me my first opportunity to cop out and flee for home. I pulled into a gas station just as the attended was placing yellow out of order signs on all the pumps. I took a deep breath and kept on going. Next stop? WalMart! They’ll have a shirt that will fit around my Dunlop’s disease and they’re on the way. I can get some Ode de’ cologne too! They didn’t have Ralph Lauren Polo so I settled for Usher ‘cause I like his music. Not sure if maybe I should be wearing white? It’s at the Toluca Lake Tennis club. I elect for my one pair of jeans that fit and a new black shirt that feels good on. Ya clothes gota feel right or just ain’t happening, am I right? Ok I’m here and layout out the dough. I get a 3 of clubs for a raffle later and discount tickets for the next single’s dances. If I attend two more in a row I get the third free? Check out these groovy sunglasses I won in the raffle. And a wide shot I took after the lessons during one of the first few songs. Got bored trying to figure out the flash on my Samsung Focus S while at the WhoopTdoo. It was kinda fun, I’ll probably try it again. Most likely at a larger venue with a live band. My name tag read: “Terry Fied” but it fell off before many could figure out how creative I am… I like to dance, and dance with a woman. I enjoy swing dancing. I’m not that big on the:...

The Revolution will be Exploited

The Revolution will be Exploited

Nov 18, 2011

I don’t know if the revolution will not be televised. Nor do I know that it will be televised. However it looks to me that The revolution will be exploited At least by Maybelline in their commercial for Baby Lips. I don’t generally watch commercials. I have a DVR in the form of Windows Media Center. However sometimes I’m held captive, for instance when I go to see a film at a theater. I guess I could leave my ear buds in a little longer… I saw this commercial from Maybelline last time I went to a movie and again last night. I’m appalled, It just blows my mind, am I wrong? Is this commercial for Maybelline Baby Lips, a huge corporation owned by L’Oréal, not using images of revolution?, a revolution that objects to the ravages of corporations on the worlds citizenry? with a New York background, where the Occupy movement began, to sell moist glossy lip balm? I duno, it just seems wrong. But perhaps I’ve tipped over that point where, like Howard Beale’s audience, "We’re as mad as hell, and we’re not going to take this anymore."1 and that my frustrations with politics, the economy, global warming, agribusiness2, education and the inequality in the distribution of assets be they financial, life, liberty, or perhaps just a pursuit of happiness for everyone has me so frustrated it’s hard not to see conspiracy everywhere. For me I think that’s what the Occupy movement is all about. Living is for everyone. There are a very few that seem to have an insatiable appetite for power and control beyond the consensus of the inhabitants of and the consequence of their actions to this, our biosphere, earth. Check out these two screen captures and a short video of the commercial, I couldn’t find the longer running version I saw that contains more of the revolution images. However I did find a behind the scenes making of the commercial that has the images. They aren’t on screen all that long, perhaps it’s a bit of subliminal suggestion? Maybe not… “It’s the end of basic lip balm” the voice over in the commercial begins and a cut away...

Truth in Advertising?; Grim Reaper selling Smokes–LOL

I was heading out to the Post office this November 3, 2011 when I came across a fairly funny scene. To me at least. It’s the Grim Reaper selling Cigarettes on a street corner. Advertising Fail! Might do better as a public service announcement. You know, one of those folks, and this one truly nameless, advertising with a flip sign. Excuse the resolution. Shot with my Samsung Focus Windows Phone 7 and cropped a bunch. Just struck me as pretty funny ha ha and funny...

I participated at Occupy LA

Friday afternoon a series of tweets from someone I follow for technology caught my eye. She tweeted many pictures from Occupy Boston. I was struck by the number of people attending. I began to read about Occupy Wall Street in New York and other cities in the US and in other countries around the world too! I learned about OccupyLa from www.ocupyla.org where I found a fairly well organized and maintained site. I was able to read about the goals and activities of Occupy LA and find a map and transportation suggestions. Note that as I write this on Wednesday 5, 2011 I see a note on www.occupyla.org that www.occupylosangeles.org is the ‘official’ website. On Sunday morning I got my information from www.occupyla.org. My main frustration in society, politics and community, what is on my mind is the lack of cooperation in our government. It’s fine to have alternate views, but I feel they need to work together to solve problems right now! Not just bicker and attempt to stonewall until they have a chance to elect their own, and regardless of who is in power nothing is getting done. Although this may not be the Occupy specific voice I felt that being counted there is a message I want to send to the powers that be whether Wall street, corporations and/or Government. The message is that I feel the lack of action and progress on the part of our government far outweighs which party holds the reigns. And the time for action is now. Too much spinning of the wheel. On Sunday October 2, 2011 I went down town Los Angeles  to see for myself and to be counted in the numbers of people that are dissatisfied with the status quo. Arriving downtown I drove around a bit and couldn’t find the specific intersection so asked some media types setting up for the Michael Jackson trial who pointed me to the correct intersection. I noted that there were five or more media trucks already setting up for the trial and logistics for at least another ten, yet only one traditional or mainstream media crew at the OccupyLA site. As I approached I found...

Power over other Pairs

Power over other Pairs (PooP – perhaps the second o is silent) I’m working on a project I’ve entered into Parallax, Inc. Spinneret Design contest. The first thing I need to accomplish after ordering and receiving the parts from Parallax is to create power for the Spinneret. Hello World on my Spinneret will have to wait for me to create a power supply and delivery method.   Basically what PooP allows for is to plug in a DC wall wart into two of the unused of four pairs in 10/100mb cat5 cabling and on the other end add regulation and filtering to supply 5vdc to the Spinneret. I could power the Spinneret with 3.3 but I want the 5vdc for an LCD and Sensirion (temperature/humidity sensor) Last night I sketched out this rough idea with parts list and a couple questions. Click on any of the following images for a larger display. Then picked the parts at a local electronics store. For curiosity sake I also picked up this surface mount RJ45 connector. I have not used it in this current project. Note that it has two LEDs They aren’t powered from the Ethernet. Rather they are supplied by circuitry on the motherboard. I’ve often noted that they power this circuit even with the computer off. Note how I created a strain relief with a zip tie  I got this low profile box at a hardware store (Lowe’s or Home depot) It shows the input jack, the LED power indicator, and the little circuit board I got at Radio Shack to build the regulator, capacitors and power on. My handwritten schematic with some pain.net annotations. I think the 3.3 vdc regulator can be placed off of the Vout of the the 5vdc regulator contrary to the ‘proposed addition’ If you know of any resources for drawing schematics please leave a comment. Perhaps clip art or templates for use in gimp, paint.net etc.. Or an actual circuit drawing program. Budget is tight. Here it is all buttoned up. I have fifty feet of cat5 between the boxes. They are sitting next to one another for the sake of the picture. And here we go! Hello...
